ALABAST/SMELTESTEIN 2020-23

Meltstone Alabaster, Svanhovd, Pasvik 2020- ?: Alabaster is a cross between marble and plaster and a sought-after material in architecture and ornamental objects. The building for the new National Museum in Oslo was sold with a field of luminous alabaster in the façade. This is to create the effect of "milky" Nordic light in the skylight hall. It turned out that the material was unsuitable in the façade, since it dissolves in humid climates. "Meltstone" is part of the project "Biodegradable art, improved fertile ground", which deals with climate and weather impact on various biodegradable materials in the north. In June 2020, a block of alabaster from Volterra was placed outside in the botanical garden at NIBIO Svanhovd in Pasvik. Changes in shape are recorded and documented with photos along the way until it dissolves and returns to Earth.

NEDBRYTBAR KUNST, FORBEDRET GROBUNN
Decay/ Declay, Fotoserie av leirblokk 18 x 22 x 38 cm, 2019-20
"Degradable art, improved soil", Varanger, 2019-20 I have placed shapes in clay and plaster on different sites in the Varanger area. I have observed the decomposition of these objects over time, and documented how these objects are reshaped by the elements. I have studied variety of degradable materials that may also influence growing conditions on the site and observed with camera the visual impact from the climatic conditions on site. My question was how long it takes to disappear altogether?

VARANGER WALKS
Tracks and Paths, Varanger peninsula 2019
Walks in Varanger:
Merlin Coverly introduces the concept of psychogeography. Wandering / walking is explored in different ways in relation to body and psyche. “Wandering in Varanger” deals with observing what happens as one walks towards or from a point. While walking I have shaped and photographed.

Varangerhus
Kvenhus/ Combination Houses
During a residency at Vadsø Guest Studio, Varanger january - february 2018, I became aware of the unique architecture of Varanger houses. Working in papercast models my approach was to reflect the endless combinations of compositions, shape and color in built in relation to site, weather conditions and landscape. The Varangerhouses combines housing of people and heard in order to take advantage of heat synergies and sheared walls to restrict use of wood. This traditional building method was brought to Varanger and Finnmark from Finish and Karelian immigrants during the years around 1850.
